NSW/ACT 2016 AFL fixture summary

There will again be two Sydney derbies in 2016, as the AFL announced its 2016 fixture, which also included an unprecedented competition-wide bye in the week before finals.
In a repeat of 2014 the Sydney Swans will host GWS GIANTS at the SCG in Round 3, before a second local match-up in Round 12 at Spotless Stadium.
The Swans kick off their 2016 premiership campaign with a huge clash against Collingwood at ANZ Stadium on Saturday, March 26 before travelling to Melbourne in Round 2 to take on Carlton at Etihad Stadium.
For the third straight year, the Swans will host the opening match of Sir Doug Nicholls Round (formerly Indigenous Round) when they take on North Melbourne for the Marngrook Trophy under lights at the SCG.
The Swans and reigning premier Hawthorn will meet in a Thursday night blockbuster at the SCG while the Swans will host West Coast at the SCG during ANZAC Round when they clash for the HMAS Sydney II Trophy.
The GIANTS will kick off their season 2015 campaign against Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday, march 26. The GIANTS first home game will come as a blockbuster against Geelong in round two at StarTrack Oval on Sunday, April 03.
GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews said 2016 represents the biggest AFL season on record in the ACT.
“We’re pleased to have an outstanding fixture in Canberra again next year as we play host to two of the AFL’s biggest clubs in Richmond and Geelong, in addition to one of the competition’s most exciting teams in Port Adelaide,” said Matthews.
